-
Key Design Features:
-
Mechanical Rotary Injection Pump: The heart of the engine. This pump (often a Bosch VE-type) is purely mechanical, making the engine simple, reliable, and easy to repair. It has no complex electronics.
-
Direct Injection (DI): Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. This is more fuel-efficient than indirect injection but results in a characteristic diesel “clatter,” which the 4JB1 is known for.
-
Overhead Valve (Pushrod) Design: A simple and robust design that contributes to the engine’s compact size and excellent low-end torque.
-
Turbocharged (4JB1-T): The turbocharger provided a significant boost in power and torque without sacrificing fuel economy, making it the preferred version.
