HINO Ranger N4C

The Hino Ranger N04C is not a truck model itself, but rather a mid-size diesel engine family that powers various Hino Ranger and other Hino light/medium-duty truck models from the 2010s onwards.

It was designed as a successor to engines like the 4-cylinder variants of the J-series (e.g., J04C) with a key focus: meeting the world’s most stringent emissions regulations without sacrificing performance or reliability.

In-Depth Look at the N04C Engine

The N04C is a compact, turbocharged diesel engine that punches above its weight class.

Key Specifications & Features:

  • Engine Family: N04C

  • Displacement: 4.0 liters (3987 cc)

  • Configuration: Inline-4 cylinder, DOHC, 16 valves

  • Aspiration: Turbocharged with a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) and intercooled.

  • Fuel System: High-Pressure Common Rail with very high injection pressures (up to 2500 bar+).

  • Power Output: Varies by application, but commonly found in ranges from 150 to 190 horsepower.

  • Torque Output: A very healthy 420 to 550 Nm, available at low RPMs.

Key Technological Features:

  1. Compact and Lightweight Design: It was engineered to be smaller and lighter than previous engines of similar output, improving payload capacity and vehicle efficiency.

  2. i-ART Fuel System (Intelligent Acoustic Control & Real Injection Technology): This is a Hino/Toyota innovation. Each fuel injector has its own built-in microcomputer and pressure sensor. This allows the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to precisely monitor and control injection timing and volume for each individual cylinder in real-time.

    • Result: Optimal combustion, maximum power, reduced noise, lower emissions, and improved fuel economy.

  3. Full Suite of Emissions Controls: To meet JP09 (Japan) and Euro VI equivalent standards, the N04C is equipped with:

    • EGR Cooler: Recirculates exhaust gases to reduce NOx.

    • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): Traps soot.

    • Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR): Uses AdBlue/DEF fluid to convert NOx into nitrogen and water.

    • Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC): Helps oxidize pollutants.

Strengths of Hino Trucks with the N04C Engine

This engine brings modern advantages to the light/medium-duty truck segment.

  1. Excellent Fuel Economy: The combination of the highly efficient i-ART fuel system, VGT turbo, and precise electronic control makes the N04C very fuel-efficient for its power class.

  2. Strong, Responsive Power: The VGT turbo provides strong low-end torque, reducing turbo lag and making the truck feel lively and responsive in stop-start city driving.

  3. Low Emissions and Environmental Compliance: This is its primary purpose. It allows Hino trucks to be sold and operated in regions with the strictest air quality laws.

  4. Refined and Quiet Operation: For a commercial diesel, the N04C is relatively smooth and quiet, thanks to its advanced combustion control and balance shafts (on some versions).

  5. Proven Reliability (with correct maintenance): While complex, the N04C has a reputation for being a reliable engine when maintained according to Hino’s strict specifications, particularly regarding fuel and AdBlue quality.
